You'd have to be living under a rock not to be aware of the case of LTCOL Terry Lakin, a decorated Army surgeon who has refused orders to deploy to Afghanistan (NOT his first deployment; Lakin has served previously in Honduras, Bosnia, Korea, and Afghanistan) until such time as President Obama produces documentation demonstrating that he meets the Constitutional requirements of his office... primarily, proof of natural U.S. citizenship.

It's important to note that, despite the now-common "birther" slur, neither Lakin nor very many other people who sympathise with him are convinced that President Obama is not a natural American citizen. This isn't the point.

The point is that, as the Constitution DOES lay out requirements for the office, anybody who wants to hold that office has an obligation to PROVE that he meets those requirements. If I had to show proof of citizenship to get MY job--the argument goes--then why shouldn't the Barack Obama have to submit to AT LEAST the same level of scrutiny in order to become President of the United States?

This case is relevant to the Jacks because, like us, LTCOL Lakin takes his own Oath of Office very seriously... so seriously that he is willing to stake his military career and perhaps his freedom on the theory that his interpretation is the correct one.

There are those who say that Lakin's uncertainty regarding the Constitutional purity of the President's authority as Commander-in-Chief does not absolve him of his obligation to obey the orders of his more immediate superiors. Alan Keyes disagrees, and has written a tightly reasoned piece expressing his argument in support of LTCOL Lakin's principled stand.

Absolutely worth a read.

General Patton once famously pointed out that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor, dumb bastard die for HIS country.

It appears the "militia movement" was packing heat at a "gun rally" on the Potomac a mere entire county and a half away from the White House. Given the way all those stalwart beltway warriors were hyperventilating about it this morning, I am relieved there was no bloodshed.

With all respect to the folks who participated, I have to ask: is this smart?

Thomas Jefferson said that when the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. As a nuisance to the regime and as a demonstration of courage on the part of the people, this is a fine gesture.

Unfortunately, Jefferson was no soldier. So instead we turn to renowned military theorist Carl vol Clausewitz, who remarked that the backbone of surprise is fusing speed with secrecy.

I'll just leave it at that.

Well, this was really something.

By around 1130 this morning, there were a good 500 people gathered at Millennium Park in Chicago. That was the police estimate, anyway... looked like a lot more to me, but they're the experts.

Anyway, it was obvious from the outset that there would be no trouble—tons of police officers and not a grape-shirt in sight—so I placed my Navy Jack at stack arms and went to work, helping to get set up and working the megaphone to keep the crowd chanting.

I was scheduled to speak, so maybe I should have preserved my voice. In any case, I was a little hoarse by the time I mounted the makeshift podoim. Here's a video--audio, really--of the speech. Thanks to StreetWise Pundit for taking the video, and double thanks for the very kind remarks!

The text of the speech is below the video:

FREE MEN

On June 28, 2005, a shepherd boy surprised four Navy SEALs high in the rugged mountains of Afghanistan. By the end of the day the men were engaged in a running firefight against a small army of Taliban fighters. Lieutenant Commander Erik Kristensen led 15 other commandos on a daring rescue mission that ended in disaster when a lucky Taliban shot took their helicopter out with a rocket-propelled grenade. The SEALs rallied and accomplished their mission, despite the heaviest casualites suffered by an American special warfare team since World War Two. Erik was a classmate of mine, and a legend among legendary men.

Erik Kristensen did not die on an Afghan mountaintop so that politicians at home could consolidate their power by bailing out the United Auto Workers!

On December 6, 2006, Major Megan McClung was escorting Newsweek journalists into downtown Ramadi when a massive improvised explosive device detonated under her Humvee, instantly killing Megan and the other two occupants of the vehicle. Megan was the first female Marine officer to be killed in the Iraq war, and the first female graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy to be killed in action, ever. She was a classmate, a shipmate, and an old friend.

Megan McClung did not perish in a hail of shrapnel in order to guarantee the voting rights of illegal aliens and dead people!

On May 10, 2007, Major Doug Zembiec entered a dark Baghdad alley leading a unit of Iraqi forces whom he had trained. Insurgents ambushed, and through the hail of enemy gunfire strode Doug Zembiec, the Lion of Fallujah, directing his men to safe positions and returning fire. A bullet cut Doug down at the height of the battle, and on the radio his men reported four wounded, one martyred. Doug was a classmate, a heroic warrior, and a towering inspiration to the Marines with whom he served.

Doug Zembiec did not lay down his life so that politicians might trade the bread from his own child's mouth for the vote of a stranger!

Thomas Jefferson once said that the tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of Patriots and Tyrants. But this is not the only tree in the garden of nations! Close upon it grows Fascism, where the State controls the means of production, and free men bend to its will. Not far behind lies Socialism, where the State OWNS the means of production, and free men become slaves. The blood of American Patriots is the very essence of national treasure. Will you spend it wisely and nourish Liberty, or will you step aside and allow Statists to feed?

Ladies and gentlemen... Americans... give me a show of hands. Who here has a brother or a sister standing a watch at sea, trading precious months and years with wives and children for the greater good of G-d and Country? Who has a son or a daughter standing right NOW on foreign soil, a human shield between America and her enemies?

America, do we commit our sons to battle so that Barney Frank can dictate how American businessmen should ply their trade?

NO!

Do we commit our sons to battle so that Nancy Pelosi can force a New Hampshire farmer to buy an abortion for a crack whore in Detroit?

NO!

Do we commit our sons to battle so that Barack Obama might take the fruit of our labor and the sweat from our brow, give it to strangers, and call it justice?

NO!

Are we slaves, or are we FREE MEN?

FREE MEN prefer the clear-eyed risk of failure and the rare triumph of success to the condescending protection of the mighty. FREE MEN prefer the honest fruits of their own labor to the pillage of their fellow man. FREE MEN keep their own counsel; FREE MEN make their own decisions; and FREE MEN pay their own way!

This debate is not about health care. It is not about bailouts, nor green jobs, nor whether Government in any form has the capacity to stimulate a national economy. This debate is about nothing less than the soul of America, the heart of the shining city on the hill, the shocking, shattering, transcendent idea that certain rights of Man are given by G-d, and that no government--NO government--has or will ever have the right to take them away so long we remain a nation of FREE MEN.

We do not reject the notion that a righteous man should help his brother in need. But we DO reject--by the blood of Patriots like Erik and Megan and the Lion of Fallujah we utterly, categorically DENY--that Government has the right to FORCE righteousness upon FREE MEN. This is nothing less than the act of a Tyrant, and upon the bones of my forefathers I swear that so long as a Patriot’s blood flows through my veins, I will remain a FREE MAN and Tyranny in America shall not prevail!

9/12 today, but I thought I'd post these in order. I had a chance to chat with a number of bloggers at the rally, and a couple of them pointed me to these two videos from the Skokie event, which I hadn't been able to find below.

The first one below was taken before the ugly confrontations started, when the area was crawling with SEIU grape-shirts and Tea Party folks were really just beginning to show up. Jobs, you know. Anyway, this guy took one look at me and apparently decided he had found himself a gen-yoo-wine wing-nut to YouTube. Thanks to StreetwisePundit for the tip!

By the way, if you click through to YouTube you'll see that the cameraman—who posted it—is pretty confident he won the exchange. You be the judge.

This next one was taken later, and is the only footage I've seen of the bit I described in my after-action post. If you watched the first one and paid attention to the cameraman's commentary, I think you'll feel a nice little sense of irony. Thanks to the Rogers Park Bench guy for getting this and for pointing it out to me!

Last night was a proof of concept.

After work I drove over to Rep. Jan Schakowski's Town Hall meeting at Niles High School in Skokie, IL. The doors were tscheduled to open at 1700 and the event was scheduled to start at 1830. I got there at about 1730, and the place was a madhouse.

The doors weren't open yet and there were a good 300 people lined up outside to get in (later news reports had 1,500 people in the room). There were hundreds of people outside not even trying to get in, almost all of them Health Care Reform supporters, and about a third of those wearing purple SEIU shirts. Most of the pro-reform crowd—and virtually all of the grape-shirts—were carrying expensive, professionally-made signs.

Initially things were very peaceful. There were a few heated arguments out by the road, no real threat of violence. Things seemed safe enough that I relaxed and indulged in a little shouting myself. Note to the Jacks: don't do that. Our guys love it, but in addition to the flag and the Black Jack it makes you a magnet for anybody with a camera, so unless you're prepared to deliver an off-the-cuff disquisition on the mission of the Navy Jacks, you can wind up looking like a real idiot. You just can't do your job out there when you're trying to focus on a camera.

Anyway, at some point somebody ran over to tell me there was trouble by the door. I soon discovered a group of about a hundred anti-Obamacare protesters arrayed across a fire lane from a group of at least four times as many people from the other side. And things were getting nasty.

The ringleader appeared to be a stocky gentleman in a frayed suit who looked to be the very cliche of a union boss. Drunk, too, as I could easily tell when I got within a few feet of him. He faded back a bit when some folks from our side began chanting "Have another drink!"

There were a few other folks from the other side who seemed intent on whipping that crowd into a frenzy. There were a number of heated arguments on the border between the two groups, and I had to do double duty to step between them all. At some point I grabbed a few guys from the Conservative crowd and showed them how to use their bodies to keep a lane clear. Things went a bit more smoothly for a while after that.

Finally, at around 1900, something changed. The agitators in the back of the crowd moved to the front and came screaming in with loud threats of physical violence. There were four of these, two who looked like gang-bangers and a couple of clean-cut fellows.

I planted myself in front with my flag at port arms and used the staff to prevent them from entering the Conservative side of the crowd. They surged up against me for a couple of minutes, screaming curses and waving their arms at me and the older couple behind me who were apparently their target, but I kept my cool and stayed out of the argument except to create the barrier. Eventually they ran out of steam and faded back.

All this time the police were standing entirely on the sidelines. After this last near-altercation faded, an officer in a squad car finally lit off his lights and buzzer and moved in to clear the fire lane. Better late than never, though, and the local cops did well enough keeping the lane clear from this point on.

At the end of the day, there was a whole lot of shouting and some shoving, but no actual violence. The Conservative side was heavily outnumbered, and the other side was well-organized and ready for a fight. There is no doubt in my mind that my intervention—both personally, and through the fellows whom I deputized—was instrumental last night in keeping people from getting hurt.

Since I was the only Jack on the scene, I had to rely heavily on the help of civilians from the crowd. Given the intensity in the moment, it was impossible for me to keep track of their names, and so I'd like to thank those guys here for stepping up. It's a testament to the decency and gallantry of the average American citizen. Guys, you made a real difference last night, and you ought to be very proud of the way you carried yourselves. I thank you all.
